A new analysis from the Liberal Democrats has revealed that a staggering 652 burglaries went unsolved across Dyfed-Powys in the year ending September 2023.
This means that on average, two burglaries a day went unsolved.
Meanwhile, only 87 resulted in a suspect being charged - equivalent to just 8% of cases.
Powys’s Liberal Democrats have slammed the Conservative Government for these alarming figures, arguing that years of ineffective resourcing have left local police forces overstretched and unable to focus on frontline crime like burglaries.
The Liberal Democrats are demanding a return to proper community policing, where officers are visible, trusted and focused on tackling neighbourhood crime.
The party is also calling for a new “Burglary Response Guarantee,” under which all domestic burglaries would be attended by the police and properly investigated.
Commenting, Liberal Parliamentary Candidate for Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe, David Chadwick said:
“With the vast majority of burglaries still going unsolved in Powys, too many people feel unsafe in their own homes.
“Time and again, this Conservative Government has failed to deliver the absolute basics of stopping and solving crime. But enough is enough.
“Powys deserves better. It’s high time to bring an end to this shameful burglar bailout - which is why Liberal Democrats will keep pushing the Conservatives to implement our Burglary Response Guarantee and get more bobbies on the beat.”
Adding his comments, Montgomeryshire & Glyndwr Lib Dem Candidate Cllr Glyn Preston said:
“Everyone deserves to feel safe in their homes and confident that if they are burgled, the criminal will swiftly face justice. It’s hard for people in Powys to feel that confidence, thanks to these shocking figures.
“Yet again, this Conservative Government are failing even to get the basics right and have been weak on tackling crime for years, now our communities are paying the price.
“People across Mid Wales deserve better - which is why the Liberal Democrats will keep fighting to restore proper community policing and implement our Burglary Response Guarantee. It’s the only way to bring an end to this shameful burglar bailout.”
